Dietro allo pseudonimo di Førtifem si cela una coppia di parigini, due illustratori che insieme danno vita a stupende immagini ricche dei più disparati riferimenti, che si cimentano nelle più varie commissioni. Gli abbiamo intervistati di ritorno dall’annuale super festival Hellfest dove hanno esposto alcune loro opere, per saperne di più su come lavorano.
Ciao ragazzi, per iniziare ci raccontate qualcosa di voi?
Adrien: Siamo Jessica ed Adrien, due illustratori e graphic designer operanti sotto il nome comune di Førtifem, veniamo da Parigi. Siamo attivi da cinque anni, lavorando principalmente per la comunità metal, ma anche per commissioni standard, come illustrazioni per stampa o pubblicità.
Dato che le vostre commissioni spaziano molto, su quale prodotto grafico preferite lavorare?
Jessica: Ciò che valutiamo principalmente è la possibilità che viene data di passare da una t-shirt black metal a un’illustrazione di moda per un magazine: preferiamo lavorare per progetti musicali, ma in realtà è la varietà dei mondi con cui lavoriamo che rende la nostra attività eccitante.
Come vi dividete il lavoro?
Adrien: Non c’è progetto in cui sia coinvolto solo uno di noi due. Siamo sempre in due durante il processo di riflessione. In seguito, a volte, uno dei due realizza lo schizzo e l’altro disegna, altre volte è più un riempire gli “spazi vuoti” dell’altro. Di solito ci dividiamo le parti del disegno in base alla tecnica o al mood che vogliamo conferire all’artwork. Jessica realizza pezzi delicati e forti, io mi occupo più delle parti architetturali sottili e dettagliate , ma dipende in ogni caso dal progetto.
Jessica: Cerchiamo di approfittare del meglio di ognuno di noi, e siamo fortunati perché funziona senza problemi. A volte non abbiamo neanche bisogno di parlare anticipatamente.
Una perfetta simbiosi dunque, vi trovate mai in disaccordo su come sviluppare un progetto?
Adrien: Certo! A volte inizialmente non abbiamo la stessa idea sulla commissione. Poi ne parliamo, e proviamo a trarre il meglio dalle rispettive idee. Nell’atto pratico, le cose più interessanti che produciamo sono quelle la cui idea è stata pensata e scolpita dalle nostre menti in lotta!
La vostra estetica ha molte ispirazioni diverse, penso al poster dei Gojira all’Hellfest 2016: dinosauri, meteoriti e un castello steampunk. Quali sono gli spunti da cui partite?
Jessica: Per questa illustrazione in particolare si è trattato di una visione di Adrien sulla musica dei Gojira. E’ una band che apprezza molto (anche io, ma meno di lui) ed è veramente appassionato di architettura abbandonata, circondata dalla natura. Per quanto riguarda le nostre ispirazioni globali, di solito provengono da soggetti antichi: biblici o mitologici, memento mori, alchimia… Ci piace molto anche la cultura contemporanea: fumetti, film, videogame. Per noi è eccitante mischiare tutto sperando che possa portare qualcosa di fresco nel nostro lavoro.
Come il poster per Perturbator all’Hellfest 2017, un perfetto crossover per esprimere il progetto retro-synth. La scorsa settimana eravate proprio al festival francese con le vostre opere, cosa ci dite dell’atmosfera che c’è a Clisson?
Adrien: E’ stato fantastico. Il primo Hellfest a cui ho assistito è stato dieci anni fa, era più a misura d’uomo e realizzato in maniera DIY. Cinque anni fa ci sono tornato con Jessica e sembrava già molto grande. Quest’anno crediamo di aver assistito all’apice dei festival metal, a metà strada fra un parco a tema e una sala concerti con sei palchi. Anche se è enorme ed è stato oggetto di una terribile ondata di caldo, è stato bello assistervi: ognuno lì sembrava si stesse davvero divertendo, e dobbiamo ammettere di aver avuto momenti peggiori nella metro di Parigi. La possibilità di esporre e vendere serigrafie lì la dice lunga sullo scopo di un festival così: raccogliere molte persone e permettere loro di scoprire tutti i lati del mondo del metal, dalle cover band ai Metal Gods. C’è un’atmosfera familiare all’Hellfest. E sì, è davvero una grande famiglia.
Per questa edizione del festival per quante band avete creato un poster? Le richieste arrivavano direttamente dai gruppi o dagli organizzatori dell’evento?
Jessica: Abbiamo realizzato poster per Behemoth e Perturbator, un’edizione modificata di un poster precedente per i Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, uno dei tre flyer ufficiali dell’Hellfest, oltre che qualche produzione personale per band non presenti all’Hellfest e alcune che non avevano nulla a che fare con le band. Intorno alle dieci stampe in tutto. La commissione viene dall’Hellfest e dal loro studio di serigrafia “L’Atelier du Grand Chic” con cui avevamo già lavorato, sia per lo scorso Hellfest che per progetti personali. Le band sono state contattate e hanno dovuto approvare i disegni prima della fase di stampa.
Pensate di venire in Italia ad esporre i vostri lavori?
Adrien: Dovremo farlo, un giorno! Abbiamo alcuni amici designer lì, GozerVisions a Milano, Blssnd in Sardegna o i grandi Perpetual Lab di Trieste, magari cercheremo di inventarci qualcosa! Con la vostra scena di tatuatori pazzesca, l’Italia è un posto molto attraente!
Quali sono i vostri tatuatori italiani preferiti?
Jessica: Brando Chiesa, Dane Soos Mancini, Pietro Sedda, Giacomo Sei Dita e Ruco (e molti altri, cerco di farmeli venire in mente!)
Su cosa state lavorando adesso?
Adrien: Al momento su del merchandise e un tour poster per Carpenter Brut e Trivium, e alcune incisioni per una grande marca di birra che però non possiamo nominare. Non vediamo l’ora di poter realizzare dei lavori personali quest’estate!

Under the name Førtifem there are two Parisian guys, two illustrator together create awesome artwork whit Several references. We interviewed them back from the annual Hellfest where they exhibited some of their works, to learn more about how they work.
Hi guys, to get started tell us something about you?
Adrien: We’re Jessica and Adrien, two illustrators and graphic designers drawing under the common name of Førtifem, based in Paris. We’ve been doing this for 5 years, working mostly for the Metal community as well as some more corporate stuff, as press illustrations or advertising commissions.
Your commissions range a lot, which graphic product you prefer to work with?
Jessica: What we valuate the most is this possibility we’re given switching from a black metal shirt to a fashion illustration for a magazine: We mainly love working for musical projects, but actually, it’s the variety of worlds we can work with gives us a really exciting way of considering our activity.
How do you split the job?
Adrien:There’s no project only one of us in involved. We’re always two in the reflexion process. After, sometimes, one makes the sketch, the other draws, other time, it’s more a fill-the-blanks collaboration. Usually we try to dispatch the drawing parts according to the technique or the vibe we want to give to an artwork. Jessica is skilled to make delicate and strong pieces, i’m more into the tiny detailled architectural parts, it really depends on the project.
Jessica : We try to take advantage of the best of each of us, and we’re lucky that goes really smooth. Sometimes we don’t even need to talk beforehand.
A perfect symbiosis, do not you ever disagree on how to develop a job?
Adrien: Sure! Sometimes, at first we don’t have the same idea on a commission. Then we talk, and try to get the best of our two ideas. As a matter of fact, it’s mostly the more interesting stuff we can come with, with an idea thought and sculpted by our two struggling brains ahah!
Your aesthetic is inspired by many different things, I think of the poster for the presence of Gojira 2016’s edition of hellfest, dinosaurs, meteors and a “Steam punk” castle, Where do you find your inspiration ?
Jessica : For this illustration in particular, it was a vision Adrien had of Gojira’s music. It’s a band he really appreciate (I do too but less than him). And he’s really into abandoned architecture, surrounded by nature. As for our global inspirations, it mostly comes from old engraving subjects : biblical or mythological stuff, memento mori, alchemy… and we’re into a lot of contemporary pop culture as well : comics, movies, video games… Mixing all of this is exciting for us and hopefully can bring something fresh in our work.
Like the poster for perturbation at Hellfest 2017, a perfect crossover for explain the retro synth project. Last week with other illustrators, you participated in the hellfest. What can you tell of the atmosphere at Clisson?
Adrien: This was pretty awesome. First Hellfest i did was 10 years ago, human-sized and DIY-ish. 5 years ago, we did a new one with Jessica and it felt already really big. This year, we discovered what we experienced as the apex of metal festival, halfway between a theme park and a six scene concert hall. Even if it’s huge and under a terrible heatwave, it feels pretty good to attend: everybody there looked to have a great time, and we must admit, we had harsher times in the Parisian Metro. To be able to show and sell screenprints there tells a lot about the the aim of such a festival: to gather and to allow everyone to discover all the sides of the Metal world, from the cover guys to the Metal gods.
There’s really a family vibe coming out from the Hellfest. And yes, it’s a pretty big family.
For this edition of the festival, how many band did you create the poster? Did the commission come from the band or the hellfest?
Jessica : We did new posters for Behemoth and Perturbator, one modified edition of a previous poster for Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, one of the three officials Hellfest posters, as well as some personal productions for bands not playing at Hellfest and some not band-related at all. Around 10 prints in total. The commission came from the Hellfest and their screen-printers ” L’Atelier du Grand Chic” with whom we had already worked, for last year Hellfest and for personal projects. The bands were contacted and had to approve the designs before the printing process.
Do you plan to come to Italy to make a exhibition?
Adrien: We’ll have to, one day! We have a few designer friends here, GozerVisions in Milan, Blssnd in Sardegna or the almighty Perpetual Lab in Triesta, we’ll maybe try and come up with something! With your insane tattoo scene, Italy is a pretty attracting place!
What are your favorite Italian tattoos?
Jessica:Brando Chiesa, Dane Soos Mancini, Pietro Sedda, Giacomo Sei Ditta And Ruco (and many others, we’re trying to figure out!!)
What are you doing now?
Adrien: Currently some merch pieces for Carpenter Brut and Trivium, a Tour poster for them too, and some engravings for a big beer brand we can’t already tell. Looking forward to being able to make some personal works this summer!
