La scena underground UK da ormai più di vent’anni si fregia di uscite doome sludge metal di grandissimo spessore. Proprio a quest’ultimo filone si ricollegano i Tides of Sulfur, confermando l’ottimo livello della band in questo specifico segmento con il loro nuovo full length Paralysis of Reason (qui recensito). Quanto proposto dalla band di Cardiff è un death/sludge metal con spiccate inflessioni hardcore che, classificazioni a parte, getta uno sguardo truce e violento su temi politici caldi e si volge al DIY estremo, caratterizzato dall’unica intenzione di annientare tutto ciò che trova sul suo cammino. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di fare delle domande alla band, per cui ha risposto il chitarrista Anthony ‘Snake’ O’Shea.

Ciao e benvenuti sulle pagine di Grind on the Road, siamo molto lieti di avervi qui. Iniziamo parlando della vostra ultima release Paralysis of Reason. Quali sono le tematiche principali su cui è basato l’album?
È la nostra release più politica fino ad ora ed il tema è sviluppato principalmente attorno alla terribile situazione della Brexit inglese sotto il regime Tory, il nazionalismo tossico eccetera, ma anche riguardo alla politica mondiale in generale. Che gran momento per essere vivi!
Il vostro precedente full length Extinction Curse è stato rilasciato tre anni fa, il che risulta inusuale stando alla vostra discografia, dato che avete rilasciato anno per anno a partire dal 2013. Avete avuto qualche difficoltà per mettere insieme Paralysis of Reason o esso ha semplicemente richiesto un maggiore tempo di elaborazione in modo da permettervi di potervi prendere cura di ogni dettaglio?
Essendo noi una band molto concentrata sul DIY per noi non è sempre possibile andare in studio quante volte vorremmo, quindi è complicato. Può essere frustrante da un punto di vista creativo, scriviamo praticamente di costante nuovo materiale e ne abbiamo un enorme quantitativo in magazzino.
Quali sono i passi avanti che avete sentito in Paralysis of Reason rispetto alle vostre precedenti release? E cosa è rimasto lo stesso come tratto distintivo della band?
Extinction Curse è stata una release più oscura e concentrata su molte questioni negative, mentre Paralysis of Reason è un aggressione totale dall’inizio alla fine. Il grasso della precedente release è stato sfoltito in modo da poter far scorrere il vetriolo in ogni traccia. Le lyrics sono molto più politiche e sono poste in maniera molto più aggressiva poiché è qualcosa che noi sentiamo molto fortemente. La grossezza del tono è ancora loro [delle tracce n.d.r.], il connubio di generi è ancora loro ed il riff dopo riff dopo riff è ancora vivo e sta bene.
Il vostro mix di pesante, martellante sludge metal e di implacabile attitudine death è piuttosto unico e decisamente ben assemblato. Cosa ne pensate della mutuale contaminazione dei generi che sta avvenendo oggigiorno?
Non vediamo la nostra come una reale contaminazione di generi. I generi si identificano da specifiche caratteristiche, ma questo non è tutto. Ecco dove le band si fottono: “Bene, se ci accordiamo bassi, suoniamo lenti e urliamo allora è sludge” … si, ma [in noi n.d.r.] ci sono molte sezioni veloci, molta attitudine punk e molto ethos che traspaiono. Abbiamo sempre avuto la consapevolezza che una canzone debba avere due cose: deve avere tutto il nostro coinvolgimento e dev’essere fottutamente pesante, nessun altro limite. Penso che prendere ciò che ti piace da generi diversi renda le cose molto più stimolanti. Perché vorresti ascoltare la stessa band suonare la stessa canzone nello stesso genere ancora e ancora? Noi non vorremmo.
Quali sono le influenze principali della band? E cosa vi ha influenzato individualmente di più come musicisti durante la vostra carriera musicale, iniziando dal principio fino ai giorni nostri?
Abbiamo un range di influenze enorme come band, ma individualmente le mie risiedono in una combinazione di Slayer, Crowbar e At The Gates. Praticamente qualsiasi cosa ascolti ed ogni riff che ho scritto può essere ricondotto a queste tre band o band direttamente influenzate da esse. Riguardo la situazione attuale l’underground del Regno Unito è pieno zeppo di band grandiose e che mi ispirano costantemente.
Il panorama musicale in cui vi inserite è più prolifico che mai, sia riguardo quantità che qualità, anche stando alla crescente richiesta da parte del pubblico. Potreste citare le vostre band e release preferite che avete ascoltato ultimamente?
The Air Turned To Acid, Mastiff, Conjurer, Venom Prison, Negative Thought Process, Leeched, Casket Feeder, Battalions, Helpless, The Atrocity Exhibit, VOW, Goblinsmoker, Minors ed alcune altre ancora hanno rilasciato degli album/EP stellari recentemente. E queste sono solo quelle che mi vengono in mente al momento!
La produzione di Paralysis of Reason è di prima qualità. Per l’appendice nerd: Quali sono gli strumenti che più hanno caratterizzato il vostro sound distintivo?
Dal punto di vista della chitarra ho registrato con diversi amplificatori ed un paio di chitarre differenti, ma gli unici elementi della mia strumentazione che sono rimasti costanti sono il mio Metal Muff ed i miei pickup Zombie Dust LSD, pickup bestiali! Bull usa pura pickup Zombie Dust nel suo basso. Per questa release abbiamo registrato tutto live, con solamente degli overdub di chitarra e di vocals, in maniera da catturare l’essenza del suono. Oltretutto avere avuto Dennis Pleckham dei Bongripper al master ha dato alle tracce una spinta extra!
Cosa bolle in pentola al quartier generale dei Tides of Sulfur? Dobbiamo aspettarci una nuova release presto, magari un secondo full length?
Abbiamo un paio di cose a cui stiamo dando priorità ed un secondo full length è leggermente più in fondo alla lista rispetto ad altro. Scriviamo e sforniamo nuove canzoni sempre, quindi tenete gli occhi e le orecchie aperti.
Come vi trovate con Sludgelord Records? Credo voi siate uno squisita ed appropriata acquisizione per il suo roster. Oltretutto vi siete congiunti ad altre label che stanno fornendo tutti i formati possibili per l’EP, dai CD alle cassette. È questa dunque una iterazione esclusiva per Paralysis of Reason oppure è d’obbligo per voi fornire la vostra musica al pubblico in ogni formato?
Sta andando terribilmente, Aaron è un megalomane! Adoriamo lavorare con lui, ha creduto in noi fin dalla nostra demo. A noi piace lavorare solo con etichette e persone che rispettiamo. Abbiamo sempre desiderato una nostra release in vinile quindi è immenso per noi averla ottenuta, oltretutto adoriamo una buona release in cassetta, specialmente l’ultimo lotto che sembra così dannatamente sexy… Crediamo che avere molti formati non solo aiuti noi e le etichette ma anche chi compra. Diamo credito per tutto ciò anche a APF Records e Astral Noize Records. (Vorrei anche ringraziare F H E D e Hibernacula per i loro eccellenti risultati)
Avete alcune esibizioni o perfino un tour in programma per promuovere Paralysis of Reason?
Abbiamo alcune esibizioni imminenti in giro per la nazione nel prossimo paio di mesi ed alcuni piani stanno prendendo forma per un tour europeo questo inverno.
Per favore dite qualcosa direttamente a chi vi ha seguito dal principio ed anche ai novizi. Cosa devono aspettarsi da Paralysis of Reason e dal futuro dei Tides of Sulfur?
Apprezziamo davvero il supporto che proviene sia dai veterani che dai novizi. Ci auguriamo che approfondendo il nostro ascolto voi abbiate scoperto anche un altro paio di band grandiose con cui abbiamo condiviso i palchi e le etichette, poiché le scene locali ed underground sono fiorenti, quindi facciamo si di tenerle in vita. Cosa aspettarsi da noi? Beh, continueremo a scrive musica fottutamente pensate qualsiasi sia il genere o lo stile che riteniamo opportuno e voi potere essere al nostro fianco o potete andarvene a fanculo. Hi and welcome on the Grind on the Road pages, we’re very glad to feature you here. Let’s begin talking about your latest release Paralysis of Reason. What are the main thematics around which the album revolves?
It’s our most political release to date mainly based around the terrible state of Brexit Britain under the Tory regime, austerity, toxic nationalism, etc. but also world politics in general. What a time to be alive!
Your previous full length Extinction Curse was released three years ago, which is kind of unusual according to your discography, since it shows that you released year by year starting from 2013. Did you experienced some difficulties putting together Paralysis of Reason or it just took a longer processing time in order to take care of every detail?
Being a heavily DIY focused band it’s not always possible to get in the studio as much as we would like so it’s difficult. It can be frustrating as from a creative stand point, we are pretty much constantly writing new stuff so we have a huge amount stock piled.
What are the steps forward you felt in Paralysis of Reason compared to your previous releases? And what stayed the same as band’s distintive traits?
Extinction Curse was a more dark release focusing on a lot of negative issues where Paralysis of Reason is utter aggression from start to finish. The fat from previous releases has been trimmed back to allow the vitriol to flow through each track. The lyrics are a lot more political and delivered a lot more aggressively as it’s something we all feel very strongly about. The thickness in the tone is still their, the genre splicing is still their and the riff after riff after riff is still alive and well.
Your mix of heavy pounding Sludge Metal and relentless Death Metal attitude is pretty unique and definitely well assembled. How do you feel about the mutual contamination of genres that is occurring nowadays?
I don’t think we really see it as genre contamination. Genres are identified by specific characteristics but that isn’t all that is to them. This is where bands fuck up “well if we tune low, play slow and scream then its sludge”… yeah but there are a lot of faster sections, a lot of punk attitude and ethos glowing through it. We have always had the understanding that a song had to do two things; have all our agreement and to be heavy as fuck, no other boundaries. I think that taking what you like from a bunch of different genres makes things more exciting. Why would you wanna hear the same band play the same songs in the same genre over and over again? We wouldn’t.
What are your main influences as band? And what has influenced you individually the most as musicians during your musical career starting from the beginning to nowadays?
We have a huge range of influences as a band but individually my main influences have been a combination of Slayer, Crowbar and At The Gates. Pretty much everything I listen to and every riff I have written can either be traced back to these 3 or bands directly influenced by them. In terms of nowadays, the UK underground scene is absolutely bursting at the seams with amazing bands that I am constantly inspired by.
The music panorama in which you fit is more prolific than ever concerning quantity and quality, also according to an increasing request from the audience. Can you shout out your favorite bands and/or releases that you listened to lately?
The Air Turned To Acid, Mastiff, Conjurer, Venom Prison, Negative Thought Process, Leeched, Casket Feeder, Battalions, Helpless, The Atrocity Exhibit, VOW, Goblinsmoker, Minors and several other have released stellar albums/EPs recently. Those are just off the top of my head!
The production of Paralysis of Reason is top notch. For the nerdy appendix: What are the gears that mostly characterized your distinctive sound?
From a guitar point of view, I have run through several amps and a bunch of different guitars but the only piece of gear that remains constant is my Metal Muff pedal and over the last 2 or 3 years, my Zombie Dust LSDs; beastly pick ups! I know Bull also uses Zombie Dust pick ups in his bass. For this release, we recorded everything live with guitar and vocal overdubs so that captures the essence of our sound. Plus getting Dennis Pleckham of Bongripper to master the tracks gave them an extra boost!
What’s cooking at the moment at Tides of Sulfur HQ? Do we have to expect a new release soon, perhaps a second full length?
We have a couple of things in the pipeline and a second full length a little further down the line. We’re always writing and coming up with new songs so keep your eyes and ears open.
How are you doing with Sludgelord Records? I feel like you are an appropriate and exquisite acquisition for their roster. Also you have joined a bunch of other labels which are providing all the possible formats for the EP, from CDs to cassettes. Is this an exclusive iteration for Paralysis of Reason or is it a must for you to provide your music to the audience in every format?
It’s going terrible, Aaron is a megalomaniac! We love working with him, he has been a big advocate of ours from our demo onwards. We only like to work with labels and people that we respect. We have always wanted to get a release on vinyl so it’s immense that we’ve managed that and we love a good cassette release, especially as the latest batch look so damn sexy… We do think that having several formats available helps not only ourselves and labels but also the people buying the music. We have to give credit to APF Records and Astral Noize Records too for this. (I also wanted to give a shout out to F H E D and Hibernacula for their continued excellent output too.)
Do you have some gigs or even a tour planned to promote Paralysis of Reason?
We have a few gigs in the pipeline around the country over the next few months and plans are taking shape for a European tour this winter.
Please state something directly to who have followed you from the beginning, also to the newcomers. What they have to expect from Paralysis of Reason and the future of Tides of Sulfur?
We truly appreciate the support from the veterans as well as all the newbies. Hopefully by getting into us, you’ve found a bunch of other awesome bands we have shared stages and labels with as the underground and local scenes are thriving so let’s make sure we keep them alive. What to expect from us? Well, we will continue to write heavy as fuck music in whatever style or genre we see fit and you can wither come along for the ride or get fucked. Support your scene kill your ego.
