I tedeschi Cranial con il loro primo album ci hanno colpito con la loro potenza primitiva e sacrale. Non ci siamo fatti sfuggire la possibilità di scambiare due parole con Bastian e Julian.

Iniziamo con il parlare del nuovo lavoro: quattro lunghe tracce che paiono collegate tra di loro. Possiamo parlare di concept album?
Bastian: Non era nostra intenzione inizialmente realizzare un concept album, e penso che in effetti l’album non lo sia. Ma al momento di unire il tutto, i brani, i testi e l’artwork, abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stata una buona idea disporre tutto nel modo in cui l’abbiamo fatto. La nostra musica è portatrice di disperazione e oscurità da un lato, ma anche di momenti più chiari dall’altro. E quando Ollo (Hummelgrafik) ci ha mostrato le sue proposte per l’artwork abbiamo pensato che avrebbe avuto senso mettere i brani e tutto il resto in quello specifico ordine e così è diventato un insieme chiuso.
Julian: Credo che solo il fil rouge atmosferico possa essere considerato come concept. Con l’album presentiamo vari stati d’animo, un’istantanea di diverse esperienze individuali. Sicuramente fa la differenza se è olistico. Per questo l’artwork è stato importante durante il processo di realizzazione dell’album. Tutto il resto è venuto insieme.
I testi paiono molto criptici. Esattamente cos’è la dark tower?
B: I nostri testi sono criptici perché sono molto personali, emozionali e catartici. La dark tower è una minacciosa e oscura mostruosità. Può essere un incubo o una sensazione, ad esempio quando ti senti intrappolato e incapace di scappare. Può anche essere un serio problema che minaccia la tua vita o un monumento che ricorda la barbarie commessa dall’umanità. Sta a te.
J: Non saprei descriverlo meglio. Puoi immaginare la torre come qualcosa di grande e spaventoso. Come gli innumerevoli non-luoghi della nostra società. Un posto in cui nessuna vita originale è possibile, ma avviene comunque.
Il suono del disco è primordiale, pare abbiate alzato ulteriormente il livello di aggressività rispetto all’ep di esordio. Cosa è cambiato nella scrittura dei pezzi?
B: Nulla di speciale. Michael è una macchina da riff: jammiamo sulle sue idee, è tutto molto democratico. Ognuno può apportare suggerimenti e quando sentiamo che girano arrangiamo i brani in base alle nostre idee e a cosa vogliamo sentire. Ciò funziona perfettamente per noi. Penso che con Dark Towers, Bright Lights abbiamo avuto più tempo per lavorare sui brani e sistemare le cose. E stavolta abbiamo trascorso una settimana con un tonmeister a Oldenburg, dove abbiamo fatto il punto della situazione con l’aiuto di un professionista.
Nei brani ci sono interessanti inserti elettronici, in futuro desiderate approfondire queste sonorità?
B: Questo riguarda Julian, dato che è lui ad occuparsi dei drones. Posso immaginare che andremo avanti con queste sonorità, ma vedremo. Siamo al lavoro in questo momento sul nuovo album.
J: Ritorneremo su questo al momento del songwriting. Ma niente è stato ancora deciso. Di sicuro non sconvolgeremo il sound in questo senso. Lo sviluppo può sempre aver luogo se è al servizio al nostro progetto nel suo complesso.
Come vedete la salute della scena underground musicale del vostro paese?
B: Penso che sia grandiosa, almeno questo è ciò che dice ogni band che viene in tour in Germania. Abbiamo un sacco di ottime band in tutti i generi qui e siamo fortunati perché molta gente va ai concerti e supporta le band. Ovviamente oggi è più difficile perché la gente sta diventando schizzinosa.
Quali band hanno influenzato maggiormente il tuo stile musicale?
B: Per me Neurosis, Helmet, Eyehategod, Black Flag.
J: Callisto (Noir LP), Vanessa Van Basten, NevBorn
Che musica ascoltate abitualmente?
B: I miei generi preferiti sono crust/d-beat, noise rock, hardcore punk, grind, sludge e post-rock.
J: Tutto ciò che riguarda il punk è di grande importanza per me. In più sono un grande ascoltatore di musica che contenga un’atmosfera chiaramente riconoscibile e allo stesso tempo affascinante.
Avete piani per venire a suonare in Italia prossimamente?
B: Non stiamo pianificando niente di speciale, ma siamo disponibili. Se dei promoter ci contatteranno vedremo.

Let’s talk about the new album. There are four long-lasting tracks, which are seemingly connected. Can it be considered a concept album?
Bastian: It was not intended in the first place to make a concept-album and i think the album is not a concept in itself. But as we put everything together, the songs, the lyrics and the artwork, we thought it would be a good idea to put it the way we did. Our music is carrying a lot of desperation and darkness on one side but also bright moments on the other. And when Ollo (hummelgrafik) showed us his suggestions for the artwork, we thought it would make sense to arrange the songs and everything in that order we did and it became an enclosed whole.
Julian: I think only the atmospheric thread can be understood as a concept. We present moods with the album, a snapshot of many individual experiences. Certainly it makes a difference if it’s holistic. That’s why the artwork was important during the whole process of making the album. Everything else came together.
Lyrics seem to be cryptic. What is exactly the “dark tower”?
Bastian: Our lyrics are cryptic since they are very personal, emotional and cathartic. The “dark tower” is a menacing gloomy monstrosity. It can be a nightmare or a feeling, for example when you feel like being trapped and are unable to escape. It could also be a truthful problem threating your life or a memorial, reminding for barbarity done by humanity. It’s up to you.
Julian: I can’t describe it better. You can imagine the tower as something big and scary. Like the innumerable non-places in our society. A place where no original life is possible, but still takes place.
The sound is primordial, it seems to be way more aggressive than the debut EP. What has changed in the songwriting process?
Bastian: Nothing special changed. Michael is a riff-machine: we jam his ideas, everything is totally democratic. Everybody can bring suggestions to the table and when we feel comfortable, we arrange the songs out of our ideas and what we want to hear. Works perfect for us. I think with “Dark Towers, Bright Lights” we had more time to work on the songs and arrange things. And this time we spend one week in the tonmeister in Oldenburg where we nailed everything with the help of role.
In the songs there are a few electronic parts, do you think you’re going to draw upon this kind of sounds in the future?
Bastian: This is Julians part since he is creating these drones. I could imagine going on with such electronic parts, but we will see. We are writing right now for a new album.
Julian: We’ll come back to that in the course of the songwriting. But there is nothing decided yet. Sure, we will not reimagine the sound in this way. Development can always take place if it serves our project as a whole.
What do you think about the underground scene in your country?
Bastian: I think it’s great, at least this is what every touring band coming through Germany says. We have a lot of good bands in every genre here and we are lucky that a lot of people set up shows and supporting bands. Of course it’s harder these days because people are getting picky.

Usually, what kind of music do you listen to?
Bastian: My favourite genres are Crust/D-Beat, Noise-Rock, Hardcore-Punk, Grind, Sludge and PostRock.
Julian: Everything that contains the genre of punk is important to me. In addition, i am a great listener of music, which carries a clearly recognizable and at the same time a fascinating atmosphere.
Are you planning to play in Italy soon?
Bastian: We are not planning anything special. But we are open – if any promotors get in contact we will see.
