Dopo la release del monumentale Ether/Return To Earth abbiamo avuto il piacere di fare una chiaccherata con la mente dei From Oceans To Autumn. Ecco come Brandon Helms ha riposto alle nostre domande.
Ciao Brandon, siamo rimasti meravigliati dall’intensità e della maestosità del tuo ultimo disco. In particolare, ho trovato Return to Earth più cupo di Ether, come due parti complementari, come il giorno e la notte. Mi sbaglio? Com’è avvenuto il processo di composizione?
Hai ragione! Sono contento che tu l’abbia detto, perché è esattamente ciò che cercavamo. Per questo disco avevamo un obbiettivo specifico in mente. Volevamo due album completi, uno che fosse più libero e sperimentale e l’altro più diretto e pesante. Al momento di entrare in studio non avevamo idea di come farlo, per fortuna tutto è venuto fuori durante le sessioni.
La cosa che più impressiona del disco è la cura maniacale rivolta ai suoni. Potresti dirci che tipo di pedali vengono utilizzati? Non aver paura di andare sul tecnico, siamo audio-nerd.
Certo. Ovviamente i delay sono una grande parte del nostro sound. Personalmente ne uso molti, perlopiù digitali (Boss RV-3, Boss DD3). Di solito non uso chorus o riverberi, mi piace sperimentare con dei rack o diversi room reverb per certe strutture. Mi piacciono i big muff, in tutte le versioni. Sicuramente quando è usato bene niente suona più pesante! Uso amplificatori Orange, soprattutto Dual Terror and Thunderverb. Il set-up cambia di album in album, a volte drasticamente.
I brani sono colmi di stratificazioni. Come suonano live?
Bella domanda, dato che sono l’unico chitarrista dal vivo è una sfida, ma è qualcosa che non vedo l’ora di fare.
Sappiamo che curi tutta la parte legata a gli strumenti a corda e i samples. Chi si occupa della sezione ritmica?
Stessa squadra dal 2006! B M H.
Hai mai pensato alla possibilità di aggiungere vocals al progetto?
In realtà sì! Non so se lo faremo mai, ma chissà.
Le copertine dei tuoi dischi contengono sempre un forte richiamo alla natura: alberi, montagne, l’oceano. Che tipo di rapporto hai con la natura e come influenza la tua musica?
Il nostro nome dice tutto. Il posto da cui veniamo si trova tra l’oceano e le montagne. Li amo entrambi! L’autunno rappresenta le montagne (è divertente che mentre rispondo a quest’intervista mi trovo proprio negli Appalachi) e l’oceano, beh quello parla da sé. La natura gioca un ruolo enorme nel processo creative e di ispirazione.
Negli ultimi anni il post-rock ha avuto una rinascita. Una moltitudine di nuove band hanno preso piede e sia in Europa che negli States festival come il Dunk! richiamano moltissime persone. Che ne pensi della scena attuale?
Mi piace. Band come Heron, Astralia, This Patch Of Sky, Fjord mi hanno davvero impressionato!
Che musica ti ha influenzato nella tue produzioni? E in generale cosa ti piace ascoltare?
In primo luogo Isis, Rosetta, Giant, Tides, Irreversible sono state le nostre influenze. Mi piace ascoltare ogni tipo di musica, dal post al country/folk, fino a tutto ciò che è heavy.

Hi Brandon, we have been amazed by the intensity and the majesty of your latest record. Can you tell us about its writing process?
For this record we had a very specific goal in mind. We wanted 2 complete albums, 1 that was more free flowing and experimental and the other that was more direct and heavier. Entering the studio we had no idea how to achieve this, thankfully everything came together during the process.
Personally, I found Return to Earth to be darker than Ether, like two complementary parts as day and night. Am I right?
Yes you are! I’m glad you said that, because that is exactly what we were going for.
What strikes most in the album is the great care you took of sounds. Can you tell us about the pedals you used? Don’t be afraid to describe specifically, we are audio nerds.
Sure thing. Obviously delay pedals are a huge part of our sound. I personally use several delay pedals, mostly digital (Boss RV-3, BOSS DD3) are among some. Typically I dont use Chorus or reverb pedals, I do like to experiment with rack mounted or different room verbs for certain textures. I like the BIG MUFF, actually several versions of it as well. Pretty sure when done right nothing sounds heavier! Orange amps, mainly dual terror and Thunderverb. From album to album the setup changes, sometimes very drastically.
Your songs are full of stratification. How do they sound live?
Good question, with me being the only guitarist live is a challenge, but something to look forward to.
We know that you take care of string instruments and samples. Who deals with the rhythm section?
Same crew since 2006! B M H
Your albums’ artworks always deal strongly with nature: trees, mountains, the ocean. What kind of relationship do you have with nature and how does it influence your music?
Our name says it all. Where we are from is in between the ocean and mountains. I love both! Autumn represents the mountains (funny, while conducting this interview I am deep in the appalachian mountains) and Ocean, well that speaks for itself. Nature plays a HUGE part in the creative process and inspiration.
Have you ever thought about adding vocals to the project?
Actually yes! Not sure we ever will, but who knows.
In the last years post-rock is reborn. A great number of new bands came out, and both in USA and Europe festivals as Dunk! gather a huge audience. What do you think about the current scene?
I like it. Bands like Heron, Astralia, This patch Of Sky, Fjord have really impressed me!
What kind of music did influence your songwriting? And, generally, what do you prefer to listen to?
Originally ISIS, Rosetta, Giant, Tides, Irreversible were our main influences. I like listening to all types of music from post everything to country, folk, to all that is heavy.
