Devo essere sincero, quando ho letto sul web dell’uscita di un nuovo lavoro di Munly & The Lupercalians, alcuni mesi fa, ero felice come un bambino a Natale…
L’onestà è una qualità ammirabile.
Seguo i vostri progetti da molto ormai, così come tutti quelli che riguardano SCAC Unincorporated Records, “l’ombrello” sotto il quale si raccolgono anche Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, The Denver Broncos UK, e chiaramente Munly & The Lupercalians, quindi potete immaginarvi quanto sia stato felice nell’intervistarvi.
L’immaginazione è forse l’unica mia particolarità… aspetta, ma queste sono domande? …Scusa, ho guardato sotto e vedo che iniziano le domande, aspetterò a rispondere allora.
Partiamo dall’inizio. Purtroppo qui in Italia il vostro nome sembra essere ancora un fenomeno underground, un segreto ben custodito diciamo. Ma chi è Jay Munly, e chi sono i Lupercalians?
Non so chi sia Jay Munly, il mio nome è Munly J Munly. Quando mia Madre era ancora in vita era l’unica ad usare il mio secondo nome. Mi chiese di metterlo in uno dei miei album prima di andarsene, e così all’improvviso è diventato il mio soprannome su Wikipedia. Ma io sono sempre stato Munly, è il nome che la mia famiglia usa per criticarmi. Mia sorella ha un nome simile – ma abbiamo cognomi diversi da quelli di nostro Padre. A quanto sembra Wikipedia mi ha anche assegnato uno dei nomi di mio zio, che usa il suo cognome e un nome simile. Sentirsi in diritto di andare a cercare negli obituari dei mei genitori usandoli come fonte di informazioni non è illegale, però è sicuramente di dubbia moralità. Wikipedia sembra essere un’ottima fonte di disinformazione. Mi sembra quasi venga curata dalle stesse persone che poi sentono la necessità di scrivere recensioni per i prodotti che acquistano su Amazon, gli stessi che fanno riferimento alle recensioni su GoodReads per sapere cosa leggere e cosa no. Mi spiace, sono andato un po’ fuori tema, ad ogni modo Munly & The Lupercalians è la band di cui faccio parte: io sono Munly e loro i Lupercalians.
Munly & The Lupercalians così come le altre band di SCAC Unincorporated Records hanno contribuito a definire il “Denver Sound”: ad oggi non ho problemi ad identificarvi come “profeti” di questo particolare genere musicale, che a somme linee può essere definito come “gothic country”, o “gothic Americana”. Vi sentite ancora parte di questo movimento, e come lo spieghereste a qualcuno di cui non ne ha mai sentito parlare prima?
Non credo proverei mai a spiegarlo a qualcuno, chi vuole stare ad ascoltare qualcuno che parla di sé stesso? Solo uno spaccone lo farebbe. Sono certo che Denver sia abbastanza delusa del fatto che il suo nome sia abbinato a gente come noi e non magari ad altre band più note. Ma ad ogni buon conto mi piace essere definito “profeta”, in genere si tratta di una persona sempre ben accetta… Non mi sono mai immaginato che la mia morte potesse avvenire a causa di una spada o per lapidazione… Giacomo il Minore fu prima buttato giù da un tempio, poi colpito a bastonate fino alla morte. Bartolomeo fu scorticato vivo, Simone lo Zelota fu segato in due… Per cui grazie per avermi definito “profeta”, sono sempre stati amati ovunque!
Il suono di Munly & The Lupercalians è intrigante, una seducente miscela di atmosfere paurose, quasi gospel e sciamaniche, talvolta quasi un festival disturbato che cattura l’ascoltatore. Tutto questo grazie a tanti ingredienti che si fondono perfettamente l’uno con l’altro: la voce di Munly e la sua interpretazione sono senza dubbio i primi elementi che saltano all’orecchio, supportati però dal sorprendente crescendo emotivo messo in piedi da tutto il resto della band. Qual è il processo alla base della scrittura dei vostri pezzi? Come riuscite a far quadrare così bene il tutto?
In genere non parlo mai del processo che sta alla base dei miei scritti, non ho interesse nel conoscere quello degli altri e non riesco proprio ad immaginarmi che qualcuno possa interessarsi al mio. In genere ci buttiamo a capofitto nel lavoro, anzi preferisco lavorare che parlare del lavoro che svolgo. Ma mi fa piacere che tu riesca a sentire la coesione dei vari elementi, i Lupercalians ci mettono tutto loro stessi nei rispettivi compiti, sono orgoglioso di loro e talvolta sorpreso di come riescano a sopportarmi.
La vostra band ha anche un forte connotato live: sul palco ognuno di voi (eccetto Munly se non vado errato) indossa una maschera. Immagino che queste siano connesse alla città immaginaria di Lupercalia, potete dirci qualcosa in più? Cosa è Lupercalia, e chi sono i Lupercalians?
Molte delle vicende su Lupercalia possono essere ritrovate nei testi delle canzoni; ci sono anche alcuni libri approfondiscono l’argomento. Confessions to Scare… racconta le storie individuali della maggior parte dei protagonisti di Lupercalia, che di fatto è una città, una terra, e i Lupercalians vengono da lì. Chiaramente se poi uno va a vedere su Wikipedia sembra che io non venga da dove in realtà provengo, solo perché non è scritto negli obituari dei miei genitori. Per quanto riguarda le maschere, invece, molti dicono che dovrei essere io il primo a dovermi coprire la faccia.
Abbiamo già parlato del “Denver Sound”: quali sono le altre band che ritenete opportuno citare per aiutarci a definire meglio il genere? Personalmente mi vengono in mente Wovenhand e 16 Horsepower ma sono certo che ce ne sono altre che non conosciamo.
Non mi sento qualificato per giudicare gli altri, solo quando avrò raggiunto la perfezione allora forse potrò farlo. Poi va detto che suoniamo per vivere, e sono troppo impegnato con il mio lavoro per stare dietro a godermi quello degli altri.
Scendiamo più nel dettaglio di Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion. La vostra pagina Bandcamp riporta: “È il primo di una serie di tre dischi di Kinnery Of Lupercalia pubblicati dalla SCACUNINCORPORATED; uno ad opera di Munly & The Lupercalians, uno di Slim Cessna’s Auto Club e uno di DBUK”. Potete dirci qualcosa in più su questo progetto?
Ognuna delle tre band menzionate rappresentano una delle legioni di Lupercalia, e le storie sono direttamente a loro collegate. SCAC (Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, ndr) rappresentano i Buells: turbolenti, e che quasi obbligano gli ascoltatori a prestare loro orecchio. DBUK (The Denver Broncos UK, ndr) sono i Toombs: gente tranquilla, anziché obbligarti all’ascolto devi essere calmo e silenzioso se li vuoi sentire. Poi ci sono i Lupercalians che rappresentano la legione degli Undelivered: una legione di individui ai quali non piace essere definiti o incasellati. Ironicamente il gruppo che rappresenta quresto individualismo è anche più numeroso.
Cosa c’è dietro i vostri testi? Il vostro mondo sembra essere così cupo e allo stesso tempo spiritualistico, riuscite a dare alla luce immagini potenti che letteralmente vivono attraverso le vostre canzoni. Munly, quale è la tua principale fonte di ispirazione quando scrivi?
Non ho bisogno di essere ispirato, non ha senso per me che una persona abbia bisogno di ispirazione per scrivere. Semplicemente mi butto a capofitto nel lavoro, forse altri lavorano diversamente ma… non si rapportano con me. E alla fine è un bene, potremmo entrambi rimanere delusi.
“Ahmen”, il pezzo posto in apertura nel vostro ultimo disco, è una vera e propria gemma costruita su un gran crescendo e pathos. Ricordo di aver visto un video su Youtube alcuni mesi fa, parte di una serie intitolata “Fortunate Listener” (qui il link), durante il quale suonavate questo pezzo. Ciò mi fa pensare che talvolta suonate i vostri nuovi brani live prima di registrarli: è corretto?
Non abbiamo un piano prestabilito, anzi dovremmo suonarle dal vivo davvero dato che nel tempo ci sono stati molti cambiamenti. Di fatto ci sono canzoni che suoniamo live che sono diverse dalle controparti registrate, e questo a dimostrazione del fatto che non ho ancora ottenuto la perfezione in quello che faccio se è vero che storie e canzoni si evolvono di continuo.
È per me difficile scegliere un pezzo preferito in Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion, le atmosfere cambiano velocemente, ogni canzone ha una propria anima e struttura e dunque tutto si riduce a termini molto soggettivi. Personalmente amo il fatto che la parte centrale del disco contribuisca nel costruire un crescendo emozionale difficile da descrivere, una sorta di flusso di pensiero trasposto in musica. C’è un brano in particolare che ami più degli altri?
È un mio obbiettivo che le atmosfere cambino di continuo, dato che ogni canzone è di fatto uno dei Lupercalians che racconta una sua storia, e spero non vengano percepiti come personaggi monodimensionali… Sai, quel tipo di personaggi che potresti anche ritrovare anche su un sito come… GoodReads. Una canzone in particolare che amo? Amare non è una cosa che mi riesce particolarmente bene. In realtà non so nemmeno se questi pezzi abbiano bisogno di essere amati da qualcuno, io li scrivo e basta, lascio i sentimenti agli altri.
Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion sarà supportato dall’uscita di un libro, Confessions to Scare…, una raccolta di storie (correggetemi se sbaglio) collegate a Lupercalia. Munly puoi dirci qualcosa di più? È il tuo primo approccio ad un tipo di scrittura di questo genere?
Confessions to Scare… è una raccolta di dialoghi tra i Lupercalians e Scare, un altro dei personaggi di Lupercalia. È apparso per la prima volta in Petr & The Wulf sotto le sembianze di Scarewulf, ed è presente anche in Undelivered Legion dove racconta le sue storie sotto le spoglie di Scarebeast. C’è poi un altro libro che uscirà a breve, Döder Made Me Do It, incentrato sulle vicende di… beh, proprio quel personaggio. Serve a dare maggior profondità e storia al mondo di Lupercalia, dico questo nel caso qualcuno decidesse di dedicare il suo tempo a queste vicende. Ci sarà poi un racconto dedicato a Petr & The Wulf, ma non so quando sarà pubblicato perché una volta che queste cose sono terminate escono dalla nostra portata. Döder Made Me Do It è stato terminato diverso tempo fa ma uscirà solo settimana prossima.
E no, non è la prima volta che scrivo, mi è già capitato di fare qualcosa di simile in passato.
Presto partirete per un tour in Europa, con una tappa anche in Italia a Bologna: è la vostra prima volta nel nostro Paese? Personalmente farò di tutto per esserci, non posso davvero perdervi ahahahahah!
No, non siamo mai stati invitati a suonare in Italia prima di adesso. Il vostro Paese sembra avere ferrei requisiti relativamente alla qualità della musica, che a quanto pare si sono ammorbiditi se è vero che stavolta ce l’abbiamo fatta. Ma nell’eventualità che leggano tutto questo immagino anche che ci verrà nuovamente impedito di suonare in Italia.
Ragazzi siamo giunti alla fine di questa chiacchierata. Spero di non avervi tediato troppo ma come già detto ero entusiasta di questa intervista, l’ho messa sul personale diciamo! C’è qualcosa che volete dire ai lettori di Grind on the Road?
Sono davvero lusingato che vi piaccia quel che facciamo, per non parlare del fatto che vi siate presi la briga di pensare a delle domande da chiedermi… Mi sorprende sempre quando qualcuno si prende del tempo per interessarsi, e vi ringrazio per questo.

I have to be honest: when, some months ago, I read about the release of a brand new album by Munly & The Lupercalians on the web, I was happy like a kid on Christmas Day…
Honesty is an admirable quality.
I have been following your projects for years now, as well as all those involving SCAC Unincorporated Records, the “umbrella” under which we can also find Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, The Denver Broncos UK, and Munly & The Lupercalians of course, so you can imagine my excitement when I heard I had the chance to interview you!
My imagination is about my only trait…are these questions? …Sorry, I just looked below, I see the questions starting. I will wait to answer.
First of all, let’s start from the beginning. Here in Italy your name is (unfortunately) still something of an underground phenomenon, let’s say a well-kept secret, so who is Jay Munly, and who are Munly & The Lupercalians?
I dont know who Jay Munly is. Munly J Munly is my name. When my Mother was alive she was the only one who used my middle name. She asked me to put that on one of my albums before she passed and suddenly that is my Wikipedia moniker. I have always been Munly, my remaining family still criticize me by that name. My sister also has a similar name—we have different surnames than our Father. Apparently Wikipedia has also given me one of my Uncle’s names that uses his surname and a similar first name. Feeling entitled to dig up my parents obituaries and then use them as a source is not illegal, yet it is morally… questionable. Wikipedia seems an amazing source of misinformation. It seems to be overseen by the same people who need to write reviews for products purchased on Amazon, even the same people who reference GoodReads reviews to be told what to read… Sorry, I have already gone a bit off topic.
Munly & The Lupercalians is a band I play in: I am Munly and they are Lupercalians.
Munly & The Lupercalians, as well as the other SCAC Unincorporated Records projects, helped defining the so-called “Denver Sound”: as of right now I have no problems in pointing you out as the prophets of this genre, which can roughly be described as “gothic country” or “gothic Americana”. Do you still feel part of this movement, and how would you explain it to somebody who’s never heard about it before?
I do not believe I would ever try to explain it to someone, who wants to hear someone talk about themselves? No one like a braggart. I’m sure Denver is rather disappointed that they wasted that title on us and did not apply it to popular bands. However, I do enjoy being called a prophet. They are always really well received and accepted… I never pictured my death to be by a sword or a stoning. James The Lesser was first thrown from a temple, that did not take so he was clubbed to death. Bartholomew was flayed. Simon The Zealot was sawed in half. So yes, thank you for calling me a prophet, loved the world over
Munly & The Lupercalians’ sound is so intriguing, a morbid mixture of spooky, gospel-like, spiritual and shamanic vibes, a crooked and in some way grotesque festival that enthralls the listener. All this thanks to many ingredients that all beautifully mix together: Munly’s voice and his interpretation are of course the first elements that emerge, but they are amazingly supported by the furious crescendo and maelstrom of all the other band members involved. What is the process behind the making of your songs? How can you make all the elements work together so well and be so balanced?
I do not really speak about my writing process. I have no interest in how others go about it and I cannot imagine anyone is really interested in mine. We put our heads down and work. I would rather work than talk about it. That is flattering that you feel all the elements working together. All The Lupercalians work hard at their respective jobs, I am proud of them and surprised that they can tolerate being around me.
Your band also possesses a strong live presence: each and every one of you (except Munly, if I am not mistaken) wears a mask on stage. I assume these masks are connected to the fictional town of Lupercalia, but could you tell us something more about that? What is Lupercalia, and who are the Lupercalians?
A lot of the history of Lupercalia can be found in the stories of the songs. There is also a few books that unveil more about Lupercalia. Confessions To Scare… tells individual stories of the majority of Characters within Lupercalia. Lupercalia is a town, a Land, the Lupercalians are from there. Of course if you reference Wikipedia apparently I am not where I am from because it was not written into my Parents obituaries. As far as the masks go, most would say I should be the first one to cover myself up.
We spoke about the “Denver Sound”: who are the other bands that you feel worthy of being mentioned, thus helping us to better define this genre? Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower are the first that come to my mind, but I am sure there are more that we do not know.
I do not think I am qualified to pass judgement on any others. Once I achieve perfection, perhaps then I might be able to weigh in. We also play music for a living. I am too busy doing my own work to enjoy anyone else’s.
Let’s dive deeper into your last release, Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion. Your Bandcamp page says that it is “the first in a series of three Kinnery of Lupercalia records to be released by SCACUNINCORPORATED record label; one each by Munly & The Lupercalians, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and DBUK.” Can you tell us something more about this project?
All three of the bands will represent one of the Legions within Lupercalia. The stories are allocated specifically to each band. SCAC will represent the Buells: a bit rambunctious and forcing a person to listen. DBUK will represent the Toombs: they are a quiet people within Lupercalia, instead of forcing you to listen them a person has to be quiet if they want to hear them. And The Lupercalians represent the Undelivered Legion: they are purportedly a legion of individuals who do not want to be pigeonholed. Ironically, the largest group that there is, individuals.
What lies behind your lyrics? Your lyrical world seems so dark and yet so spiritual, you manage to give birth to some powerful images that literally live through your music. Munly, what is your main source of inspiration when you write something?
I don’t need to be inspired. That does not make sense to me that a person would need to be inspired to work. I simply put my head down and do it. Perhaps others work differently than I do, but… they don’t speak to me. Which is probably for the best, I imagine we would both be disappointed.
“Ahmen”, the opening song of your album, is an absolute gem, built on a brilliant climax and pathos. I remember seeing a video on Youtube many months ago, part of a series called “Fortunate Listener” (here’s the link) where you were playing this song live. This makes me think that you like to perform some of your new pieces live before recording them: am I correct?
We have no specific map as far as that is concerned. We should probably perform them live because many changes happen over the years. There are songs we perform that are certainly different from when they were recorded. Which goes to show that I still have not achieved perfection if the stories and songs are still evolving.
It’s really hard to pick a favorite on Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion, the moods switch very fast, each song has a different structure and feeling so everything is so personal and subjective. Personally I love how the core of the album, the central songs, help build a crescendo of sensations really hard to describe, making it more like a sort of stream of consciousness put in music. Is there a song you love more than the others?
I hope the moods switch. Each song is an individual of Lupercalia telling their story and hopefully they are not one dimensional characters… you know, characters you might find in someplace like… GoodReads. A song I love? Love is not something I am particularly accomplished at. I don’t know that they need to be loved. I just write them I will leave the sentiments to others.
Kinnery Of Lupercalia; Undelivered Legion will be supported by a book, Confessions to Scare…, a collection of stories (but please correct me if I am wrong) related to the world of Lupercalia. Can you tell us something more about this book? Is it your first approach to this form of writing or have you already done something similar in the past?
Yes, Confessions To Scare… is a collection of conversations between individuals in Lupercalia and Scare…: also a character in Lupercalia. His first appearance was on Petr & The Wulf where he appeared as Scarewulf. He is also in the Undelivered Legion and tells his story as Scarebeast. There will be another book out next week: Döder Made Me Do It. That is a novel involving… well, that character. It gives a bit more history into Lupercalia and unveils a few more layers… that is, if anyone is interested in taking their time and uncovering these things for themselves. There will also be a full novel of Petr & The Wulf—I do not know when it will be out, once these things are turned in they are out of our hands, Döder was finished quite some time ago and yet it only comes out next week. No, this is not my first attempt. I have done something similar in the past.
Soon you will embark on a European tour that will touch an Italian venue as well, Bologna: is it the first time you’re going to be playing music in Italy? And, by the way, I will do my best to be there to see you playing live, I cannot miss you eheheheh!
No, we have never been invited to play in Italy before. Italy has strict requirements for the quality of music, apparently those have been severely slackened as we made it through the screening process. However, if they happen to read this I imagine they will once again bar us from crossing into your land.
Guys, this is the end of our long chat. I do hope I did not bore you too much with all these questions, but as I said I was so thrilled to interview you so I felt it personal, we can say! Is there something you would like to say to Grind on the Road readers?
