Freschi di un album nuovo di zecca, Ghosts of the Timeless Void (qui la nostra recensione) e nel pieno del loro tour europeo (oggi e domani saranno in Italia), ci siamo fatti una chiacchierata con i berlinesi Ancst. A risponderci il cantante Tom. Enjoy it!

Ciao ragazzi e benvenuti su Grind on the Road. Io inizierei col presentare a chi non lo conoscesse l’Ancst Collective. Cos’è e qual è la sua mission?
TOM: Hey! Siamo un gruppo di amici che suonano musica. Questo è quanto. La parte del collettivo viene dagli inizi del progetto, quando eravamo solo una studio band composta da membri variabili. Ora siamo una band tradizionale con una line-up più o meno stabile. La dichiarazione sulla nostra mission può essere interpretata come il nostro obbiettivo di conferire ai brani un approccio critico, dal punto di vista dei testi.
L’anno scorso vi siete separati da Torsten, in che modo ha influito sulla scrittura di Ghosts of the Timeless Void?
Non ha influenzato i brani dell’album ma è stato strano, perché abbiamo iniziato insieme come duo e Torsten scriveva tutti i testi dei primi dischi, e ci cantava anche prima che mi unissi a lui dietro al microfono. È solo più lavoro per me ora, e meno aria sul palco!
Con il nuovo album avete abbandonato il circuito delle etichette underground passando per la ben più nota Lifeforce. Quali i pro e i contro di questa scelta?
Secondo me Lifeforce è ancora una piccola etichetta, ma lavorano a un livello molto più professionale rispetto a tutte le piccole label DIY con cui abbiamo collaborato finora. Si tratta sicuramente di un passo avanti e Stefan della Lifeforce è stato di grande aiuto per noi. Non posso dire quali sono i contro sinora, perché è una novità e l’album è stato pubblicato da poco, ma per quanto riguarda i pro, promozione ed esposizione sono senz’altro divenute maggiori e sono curate molto più di quanto facessimo prima. Il flusso di lavoro è molto organizzato, a un livello professionale, il che rende alcuni compiti quotidiani della gestione di una band molto più semplici. Siamo molto soddisfatti della scelta che abbiamo preso e non vedo l’ora di scoprire cosa ci riserva il futuro.
Avete realizzato il videoclip di “Dying Embers” con la TUMULT filmproduktions. Com’è che la scelta è caduta proprio su questo brano e come sono andate le riprese?
È la canzone che secondo noi rappresentava al meglio l’intero album. È stata una decisione davvero rapida. Riguardo le riprese, onestamente è stato molto strano. Alcuni di noi hanno già avuto esperienze con riprese di video musicali, ma io no, quindi mi sembrava piuttosto strano gridare dentro una stanza vuota, ed essere filmato, e tutto il resto. I ragazzi di Tumult sono fantastici e con alcuni di loro siamo amici da molto tempo, quindi ci hanno trasmesso un buon feeling e si sono presi cura di una bella atmosfera.
A guardare la vostra discografia ci si impressiona nel notare una grande prolificità. Qual è la vostra politica in tal senso?Assolutamente nessuna politica! Nah, pubblichiamo più delle altre band solo perché ci piace così. L’intero processo di mettere insieme una nuova release è sempre una cosa divertente. Inoltre, pensiamo che sia importante mantenere le cose in moto perché sai com’è, ci sono molte band là fuori. Proviamo a non scomparire.
Bilanci del tour europeo di supporto all’uscita di Ghosts of the Timeless Void.
Mi trovo a Zagabria in questo momento mentre scrivo. È stato un viaggio fantastico fino ad ora. Bei show, bella gente, ottime band. Domani avremo un day off, lo passeremo a Venezia e siamo entusiasti di suonare in Italia per la prima volta.
Concluso il tour come vi muoverete? Dobbiamo aspettarci altre uscite a nome Ancst quest’anno?
Sì, siamo già al lavoro su roba nuova. Abbiamo pianificato altri split, e altro ancora dalla nostra parte più dark ambient. Non voglio rovinare la magia, quindi, semplicemente, aspettatevi nuove cose.
Che funzione sociale deve avere oggi la musica estrema? Cosa significa per voi suonare negli Ancst?
Credo di vederla sotto il punto di vista dell’emancipazione. È ancora importante per me connettersi con altre persone tramite la musica e con gli Ancst posso farlo. I testi significano ancora qualcosa per me ma non sono più così elitario circa il mio codice morale rispetto a prima. È ancora importante dire la propria e tentare il cambiamento, ma lascio che la gente scelga di affrontare ciò, oggi. La band è la mia bolla sociale, sono amico di quasi tutti questi ragazzi da un paio di anni, quindi è un’entità importante nella mia vita. Credo di parlare per tutti i membri della band quando dico che usiamo questo come uno sfogo dalla frustrazione quotidiana e tutto il resto. È fantastico quando incontro persone che usano la nostra musica come la usiamo noi.
Le cinque più sottovalutate band tedesche che noi italiani non conosciamo abbastanza bene.
Dovreste provare i Depravation (abbiamo appena pubblicato uno split con loro). Fanno questo blackened hardcore ma con una forte impronta hardcore anni ‘90. Anche i Welk dalla Germania dell’est sono fantastici. Anche loro seguono il trend del blackened hardcore ma fanno un ottimo lavoro nel mischiare crust e black metal. Se vi piace il vecchio chaotic hardcore tipo Curl Up And Die, Botch e i vecchi Norma Jean dovreste provare l’altra band del nostro chitarrista Mirko, i Sinatra, e la band del nostro sostituto chitarrista, gli Hyenas. Ultimi, ma non per importanza, gli Yacht Communism con il nostro vecchio chitarrista Andi. Fanno roba wave post punk, del tutto differente dalle altre cose che ho consigliato, ma se siete aperti a questi generi dovreste provarli.

Hi guys, welcome on Grind on the Road. I’d like to start by introducing Ancst Collective for people who don’t know it. What is it, and what is its mission?
TOM: Hey there, we are a group of friends playing music. That’s pretty much it. The collective part is from the beginning of this project when we used to be a studio only band consisting of changing members. Now we are pretty much a traditional band with a more or less stable line up. The mission statement can be interpreted as our aim to give our songs a critical approach lyric wise.
Last year you parted ways with Torsten, how did this influence the songwriting of Ghosts of the Timeless Void?
It didn’t really influence the songs on the album but felt strange as first as we both started out as a two-piece together and Torsten wrote all the lyrics to the first records and also sung on them before I joined him on vocal duties. It’s just more work now and I have less air on stage.
Releasing your latest album with the well-known Lifeforce Records you abandoned small labels. Pros and cons of this choice?
In my opinion Lifeforce is still a smaller label but they operate on a much more professional level than all the DIY labels we have worked with so far. It’s definitely a step forward and Stefan Lifeforce has been a huge help to us. I can’t really say what the cons are so far as its really fresh and the album has just been released but for the pros, promotion and exposure are definitely things that got bigger and are taken care of much more than they used to be. The workflow is much more sorted and on a professional level which makes some day to day tasks of running a band much easier. We are really satisfied with the choice we have taken and I’m really looking forward what the future will bring.
The official videoclip of “Dying Embers” has been produced by TUMULT filmproduktions. Why did you choose this song in particular and how did the takes go?
Well it was the song we thought would represent the sound of the album best. It was really a fast decision. Regarding the filming, to be honest it was really weird. Some of us already has experience with shooting music videos but I didn’t so it felt kinda strange screaming into an empty room and getting filmed and all that. The people at Tumult are awesome folks and we have been friends with some of them for some time so they really gave us a good feeling and took care of a good atmosphere.
Your discography is impressing because of the large amount of releases in a few years. What’s your policy about that?Absolutely no policy! Nah, we just release more than other bands ‘cause we like it that way. The whole process of coming up with a new release is a fun thing always. Also, we think it’s important to keep things running as you know how it is, it’s a lot of bands out there. We try not to disappear.
Any comments about the European tour supporting Ghosts of the Timeless Void?
I’m sitting in Zagreb right now while writing this. It has been an awesome trip so far. Good shows, nice folks, amazing bands. We are having an off day tomorrow, we will be spending in Venice and are stoked to be hitting Italy for the first time.
What are your plans after the tour? Can we expect some new release later this year?
Yeah, we are already working on new stuff. There are some more split releases planned and more of our dark ambient stuff. I really don’t wanna spoil the magic so just expect us to come up with more stuff.
What is the social function of extreme music nowadays? What does it mean to you to be in Ancst?
I guess I’m looking at this from an emancipatory point of view. It’s still important for me to connect through music with other people and with Ancst I can do that. Lyrics still mean something to me but I’m not as elitist about my moral code than I used to be. Still it’s important to speak up and try to make a change but I let people choose if they wanna get confronted by this nova days. The band is my social bubble and I have been friends with most of these guys for a couple of years so it’s an important entity in my life. I guess I speak for everyone in the band when I say we use this as a vent and an outlet for daily frustration and all of this. It’s awesome when I meet people that use our music the same way.
Recommend to us five underrated German bands which Italians don’t know very well.
You guys should check out Depravation (we got a new split with them out). They are doing this blackened hardcore thing but with a strong 90s HC vibe. Also Welk from eastern Germany are amazing. They are on that blackened hardcore bandwagon but they are doing an amazing job at mixing up crust and black metal. If you dig old chaotic hardcore like Curl Up And Die, Botch and old Norma Jean you should check out our guitar player Mirko’s other band Sinatra and our fill in guitar player’s band Hyenas. Last but not least check out Yacht Communism with our old guitar player Andi. They are doing some wave post punk stuff. Completely different than the other stuff I recommended but if you are open for stuff like this check it out.
